Marketing Yourself

Dressing for Success

Always wear a suit to interviews, even if you know the company is casual.  You must make a professional first impression.  It is a good idea to dress a “step up” than the rest of the office for your interview.  Ensure that your suit is not too tight, does not show too much skin or is not too fashionably awkward. Do not be too trendy; play it safe for your interview.  Make sure your jewelry and hair is slightly on the conservative side.  Click here to view examples

How to market skills/experience from Phi Mu and college

You served on your chapter’s Executive Committee, represented Phi Mu as a recruitment counselor and were elected to your campus’ Panhellenic Council in college, but how do you explain that to someone who is not Greek?  In interviews and on résumés, you should try to stay away from “Greek only” terms and use terms that are universal. “Leadership” is a powerful word; do not be afraid to explain the roles you have taken in your chapter in terms the average person will understand.

Facebook and Twitter: How they affect your chances of landing your dream job.

Employers are now creating Facebook and Twitter accounts to screen candidates for employment.  When applying for jobs, use these sites to promote your assets, talents, involvement, etc.  Do not let your profile be the reason you are not hired.  Information posted on the web is available to anyone, including prospective employers.  If you would not want your grandmother to see your postings, then do not post them at all.

In regards to Facebook, the best advice is to lock down your personal profile so that only friends you approve can see anything on that profile. Then, create a second, public profile on Facebook purely for professional use. This profile functions like an online resume, and should only contain information you'd be comfortable telling your potential employer face to face. Having a social networking profile is a good thing – it presents you as technologically and professionally savvy. Just make sure your profile is helping to present your best side
